Pair of andon or lamps
in tall circular forms, of black lacquered wood and paper with bronze
fittings, candle prickets and oil plates, two of the small oil and wick
dishes lacquered red on the interior. From Kyoto. Early Meiji era,
circa 1870 – 1880.
Elegant proportions and extremely fine quality workmanship set these
andon apart from what was generally produced. The bronze fittings were
heavily cast; the large circular plates that rest on the base to catch
oil made of heavy spun sahari bronze; the form was elongated beyond the
norm; the highest grade of roiro black lacquer applied in many more
coats.
34 ½” high x 13 ¼” diameter, each.
