Light Through Clouds, Modern Japanese Paintingcatalogue cover $125.00, 229 pp, 61 color illustrations with additional color details, cloth, dust jacket. 2005

    Introduction

Our standard oversized folio catalogue, printed with extraordinary attention to color fidelity. Light Through Clouds looks at Nihonga or Japanese style painting from the first forty to fifty years of the 20th century, a period of great patronage and creativity in Japan. Great examples of modernist portraiture balance masterpieces of Japanese naturalism and landscape painting, many created for the annual juried art exhibitions sponsored by the Imperial Japanese government, with provenance in the catalogues of the exhibitions or from publications in Japan. Numbers were acquired by us directly from the former Megoro Gajoen Museum, when we were fortunate to be the first western dealers able to sift and purchase from the collection in 2002 and 2003. Illustrations of the works with close-ups of the paintings afford an intimate experience of the art, balanced by provenance and biographies of the artists.
